Canada to Hold General Election on April 28 Amid U.S. Tariff Dispute

Economy

On April 23, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dissolved Parliament and called for a general election on April 28. The key issues include new U.S. tariffs and President Trump’s unexpected suggestion of annexing Canada.

Carney met with Governor General Mary Simon, who represents King Charles, to formally request the dissolution of Parliament. Simon approved the request on March 23 and set the election date.

Since March 4, the U.S. has imposed additional tariffs on Canadian imports, excluding those covered under the USMCA. A 25% tariff now applies to steel and aluminum, prompting Canada to introduce retaliatory tariffs.
